Welcome to Streetprint Manila

Streetprint Manila is a research project that is part of a larger research endeavour called “Six Continents and Between”. Initiated by Prof. Gary Kelly of the University of Alberta, 6CAB seeks to investigate popular print culture across various geographical, sociocultural, and ethnolinguistic contexts. More specifically, it aims to look at reading patterns and preferences of the Filipino Everyman, or those whom we would largely consider members of the “masa” class.

Flipside and Digital Publishing in the Philippines

Now, in 2014, the e-book industry in the Philippines is still nowhere near the size of the print industry, but we project the growth to mimic US growth from 5 years ago. Whereas in 2011, Filipinos could only purchase e-books through Amazon and then eventually Flipreads.com, now the following e-bookstores are available to the Filipino market: Amazon, Kobo, Google Play, Flipreads, and at least three other homegrown e-bookstores. The number of major e-bookstores that support the Filipino language has also grown: three years ago, none of them accepted works written in Filipino or Tagalog. Now, the following accept Tagalog/Flipino books: Apple iBookstore, Kobo, Google Play. Technically, Amazon does not accept Filipino titles, but some titles occasionally make the cut.
