Welcome to Streetprint Manila

Streetprint Manila is a research project that is part of a larger research endeavour called “Six Continents and Between”. Initiated by Prof. Gary Kelly of the University of Alberta, 6CAB seeks to investigate popular print culture across various geographical, sociocultural, and ethnolinguistic contexts. More specifically, it aims to look at reading patterns and preferences of the Filipino Everyman, or those whom we would largely consider members of the “masa” class.

Finally got around to uploading all the write-ups and narratives. I also tried to include as many links to media as possible. Should text formatting be off or if there broken links to any of the photos or external sites, please let me know so I can fix it--I have never done HTML before but I've been working on it!

As of August 6, 2014, Streetprint Manila is up and running! Please feel free to browse through the contents of the site: there's a lot to see! Hopefully this will be an informative and useful source for those interested in Philippine popular literature and culture. If you need to use any of the pictures or Narratives for research or scholarly purposes, please send me an email to ask for permission.



Updates Are Underway!

Hi everyone! We started this project in July 2013 with an initial field research in the Philippines, where I met up with a number of people in academia, publishing, music, and news & current affairs to discuss the current situation of popular literature and media in the Philippines. I also gathered as many artifacts to bring back to Canada, which included books, magazines, and CDs (most of these artifacts are kept at the University of Alberta). The past few months have mostly been spent uploading pictures and creating write-ups for the artifacts that were collected during my month-long trip in the Philippines.

Recently, we gathered a number of new artifacts to add to the ones that we had already collected. Most of these new artifacts were either produced or released in 2014, so they are quite current. I wanted to add these new artifacts to the preexisting ones so as to give an idea of how much or how little tastes, trends, and interests changed throughout the one year when this project was being developed.

I am currently trying to upload more scans of the artifacts we recently acquired, as well as some writeups and reflections from people I met during my trip. I am hoping that the site will go live with full content by the end of July 2014. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
