Because so few of these amateur writers have knowledge of industry standards and practices and/or not represented by professional agents, many of them are being underpaid or legally bound to unfair contractual obligations. Those who are trying to get their foot into the door of the industry and who are enamored by the idea of seeing their names published on paper are especially vulnerable. As such, safeguards need to be instituted to protect such writers and their families.
