Welcome to Streetprint Manila

Streetprint Manila is a research project that is part of a larger research endeavour called “Six Continents and Between”. Initiated by Prof. Gary Kelly of the University of Alberta, 6CAB seeks to investigate popular print culture across various geographical, sociocultural, and ethnolinguistic contexts. More specifically, it aims to look at reading patterns and preferences of the Filipino Everyman, or those whom we would largely consider members of the “masa” class.

What's Original about Pinoy Music?

For Rez, pop music reflects both the positive and negative things about Filipino culture. He laments how Philippine music is characterized by “kanya-kanyang trip”, or a very individualistic approach to music. Rez says, “As a culture, it’s no surprise that [Filipino music is] stereotypically both based on external influential pressures and internal indentity-problems and insecurities. What makes it hard to put a finger on… is our seemingly innate nature to always connect our perception of music with other things. Music-politics. Music-culture. Music-business. Music-humor. Music-art. Music-sociology. Music-philosophy. This is where it gets very confusing, especially for those who don’t seek deeper understandings of what music is for the modern Filipino.”
