Welcome to Streetprint Manila

Streetprint Manila is a research project that is part of a larger research endeavour called “Six Continents and Between”. Initiated by Prof. Gary Kelly of the University of Alberta, 6CAB seeks to investigate popular print culture across various geographical, sociocultural, and ethnolinguistic contexts. More specifically, it aims to look at reading patterns and preferences of the Filipino Everyman, or those whom we would largely consider members of the “masa” class.

Framed Narratives

Many Filipino comics continue to maintain some aspect of social commentary or “humorizing” some elements of Filipino society and culture. One of the more popular comic series that does so is Pol Medina’s Pugad Baboy (Swine’s Nest, 1988). Originally appearing in the newspaper Philippine Daily Inquirer, Pugad Baboy is about a community of obese Filipinos embroiled in the (mis)adventures of domestic life. It also presents critique of cultural, political, economic, religious, and even popular, celebrity-related issues. After a controversy involving a comic strip about lesbianism in Filipino all-girls’ Catholic schools, Pugad Baboy was pulled from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and is not published online at www.rappler.com.
