Of Love and Romance
Perhaps the precursors of the modern-day romance novel can be traced to the popular forms awit (song) and corrido (narrative ballad). Quoting Gabriel Bernardo, Dr. May Jurilla differentiates these metrical romances based on their measure and tempo: the awit has lines made up of twelve syllables and set to music in andante, while the corrido has eight syllables in its lines and is set to allegro.
