Welcome to Streetprint Manila

Streetprint Manila is a research project that is part of a larger research endeavour called “Six Continents and Between”. Initiated by Prof. Gary Kelly of the University of Alberta, 6CAB seeks to investigate popular print culture across various geographical, sociocultural, and ethnolinguistic contexts. More specifically, it aims to look at reading patterns and preferences of the Filipino Everyman, or those whom we would largely consider members of the “masa” class.

A Day Among The Religious

Interestingly, the Church is also one of the best places where readers gather. Entering Quiapo Church enabled me to witness the different kinds of readers: students clasping their novenas, lay men giving out paper missalettes (the word is not even in the dictionary which speaks a lot about how this text is unique to the county or at the very least in Catholic countries), devotees holding bibles as they kneel their way to the altar and even some reciting prayers from their mobile phones.
